A quick guide to what you need to know about PECOS

  • What is PECOS?

PECOS, the Provider Enrollment Chain and Ownership System, is an online system that allows you to manage your provider file with Medicare.

  • Why did Medicare create PECOS?

PECOS was designed so that referring physician’s credentials can be verified before Medicare claims are paid.

  • How does this apply to me?

All physicians and non-physician practitioners need to enroll in Internet-based PECOS or claims for Medicare covered items and services that they prescribe or order will not be paid by Medicare.

  • I’m already enrolled in Medicare. Do I need to enroll with PECOS also?

Yes. If you have enrolled in Medicare since 2003, you may already be in the system. It is still very important to your patients that you check your PECOS status. Otherwise, they may not receive the items you prescribe.

  • Does it cost anything to enroll in PECOS?

  • When do I need to enroll in PECOS?

You should enroll with PECOS as soon as possible to ensure Medicare will cover the items and services you prescribe for your patients.  It is also important to revalidate your PECOS listing at the required time-frames in order to ensure uninterrupted enrollment.

  • Step 1 – Log on to the PECOS website

The first step is logging on to Medicare’s PECOS website.

  • Step 2 – Create a User ID and Password and login to the site

For security reasons, physicians and non-physician practitioners should change passwords periodically, at least once a year.

  • Step 3 – Follow the instructions to enroll online

Complete, review, and submit the electronic enrollment application via internet-based PECOS.

  • Step 4 – Print, sign & date, and

mail in the two-page Certification Statement

All paperwork should be sent as soon as possible to complete the PECOS registration process. Additional information can be found on CMS’ PECOS FAQ page:
